Container Magic Evening

14th April 2015, 17:30-21:00, Google Amsterdam , Amsterdam

GDG Netherlands and Google Amsterdam proudly present a magical evening regarding "Containers and the Google Cloud Platform".

Abstract

Docker, Mesos and Kubernetes: Real World Experiences on Google Cloud Platform

GDG Netherlands and Google are excited to host an evening of talks about Containers and container orchestration on Google Cloud Platform. We’ll get some real life examples and deep dives from local experts Tim Nolet and Christiaan Hees who are building new businesses with Docker, Mesosphere, and Kubernetes/Google Container Engine. They’ll also touch on their use of Go, AngularJS, and Meteor in these projects.

Speakers & Agenda

  • 18:15: Matt Feigal, Google Introduction: Breaking the IaaS/PaaS boundaries

IaaS and PaaS has been a binary choice between flexibility and agility. At Google Cloud Platform we are changing this into a continuum: you should be able to move up and down the continuum without rearchitecting your entire stack. I’ll explain how we are integrating containers to help you move up and down the continuum easily.
    Matthew Feigal

  • 18:45: Tim Nolet: VAMP or the Very Awesome Microservices Platform (45 min + questions)

Over the last year Tim and his team have been hard at work building Vamp or the Very Awesome Microservices Platform (http://vamp.io). This talk will detail what Vamp is, how it leverages technology like Docker and Mesosphere and what specific problems it is addressing. This talk is not a product pitch: we will dive into the tech and concrete challenges and problems that bubble up once you start poking deep into container tech and its ecosystem.

    Bio Tim Nolet:

Tim Nolet is CTO and co-founder of Magnetic.io and has a 15 year background in online services and enterprise IT. Ex-operations and recovering enterprise architect currently on a mission to truly reap the benefits of all things automatable.

  • 19:45: Lightning Talks

Using Kubernetes or Docker? Share your experience for 5 minutes!

  • 20:15: Christiaan Hees, Q42: A real life look at Kubernetes & Google Container Engine

At Q42 we’ve been using Meteor for a while now to build web apps. It’s a great framework, but one of our concerns was hosting and whether it would scale. We tried multiple setups ranging from bare Compute Engine to Managed VMs and lately Kubernetes and Container Engine. In this talk I will show you our Container Engine setup and discuss the pros and cons of the various options.

    Bio Christiaan Hees:

Christiaan Hees is a software engineer at Q42, a strategic internet agency based in The Hague, Amsterdam and Mountain View. He’s a fan of the Google Cloud Platform and has been working with Container Engine and Managed VMs since the beginning.
